I understand your frustration and loneliness, having felt that way in different circumstances throughout my life. I integrated a New York City elementary school in the 50s. My first year there, I was the only black student in the school. I had been sent there as part of a gifted program. Like your school, my classes were centered on learning activities. In contrast to your experience, I felt better there than at the neighborhood junior high school I was forced to attend afterwards. Times were difficult then as now, but I felt more isolated at home where my neighbors often treated me differently. We were all Black.
Thank you for your insightful piece.
